February 21, 1010

The Blue and Gold Banquet is next weekend (Feb. 27th), and we have planned a wonderful evening for our extended scout family and invited guests.  At this 100th birthday party, we will celebrate the February 1910 founding of the Boy Scouts of America, present awards to scouts based on recent achievements, and recognize our leaders for providing an excellent scouting experience for our pack.  Following pack tradition, we will have items for scouts to purchase with “cubby bucks” which they have earned through participation in Den and Pack activities, and for the adults, we will have a silent auction and cake auction (don’t forget your checkbooks).  Another part of our tradition is the cake contest, where scouts make and decorate cakes with their families to compete in a variety of categories, and then the winners are auctioned and the rest are served for dessert; rules for the cake contest are posted on our website.

Next month (March 16th), we will conduct the Arrow of Light ceremony at a special outdoor pack meeting at Winding Trails Boy Scout Camp.  At the Arrow of Light ceremony, each second-year WEBELOS scout will be presented with an arrow that represents his journey through Cub Scouts.  Those scouts will also participate in a secret teepee ceremony, and will cross the bridge from Cub Scouting to their future, which for many will include Boy Scouting.  Younger scouts usually enjoy this ceremony (which includes drumming on coffee cans and other percussion-like devices), and they appreciate it as something to look forward to when they are WEBELOS.  I hope that everyone will come and be part of the ceremony, and help say goodbye to our “graduating” WEBELOS and their Den leaders.

Additional Pack Business:

Ø     Our pack has been rechartered for another year.  We currently have 49 registered scouts, including one who joined our pack just last month: welcome to the Pruitt family.

Ø     Our pack’s financial health continues to be good, thanks to a combination of successful fundraising efforts, sound financial management, and generous support by our pack families and chartered organization, the American Legion Gold Star Post 191.  Please note that fundraising activities like the Silent Auction and Cake Auction at the Blue and Gold Banquet help make it possible to keep many pack activities (like the Blue and Gold Banquet dinner) free for all participants and to avoid increasing annual registration fees.

Ø      Volunteers are still needed to replace leaders who will be leaving the pack as early as next month, when their sons “graduate” from Cub Scouts at the Arrow of Light pack meeting.  Positions that need to be filled include: Committee Chair, Assistant Cubmaster, and Newsletter Editor. Other open positions include Training Chair and Campmaster.  If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact me.

Our Pack Committee includes our Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Advancement Chair, Treasurer, Fundraising Chair, Webmaster, Chartered Organization Representative, myself, and other parents interested in helping run the pack.  We meet once a month, usually at a Committee member’s home, and all parents are welcome to participate.  See details on the Pack Calendar (see “Leaders Meeting” items).
